Tell Your
Own Story!
"But, Pippi," said the teacher impatiently... "why in the world aren’t you drawing on your paper?"
"I filled that long ago. There isn’t room enough for my whole horse on that little snip of paper."
― Pippi Longstocking
AN APPROACH BUILT ON YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
Here at The Story Ladder, we follow your child's ideas and stories, wherever they may lead.
We aim to keep up with, and encourage, your child's relentless inquiry into how the world works and their keen desire to make a positive impact. Our goal is to help foster the development of happy, healthy, confident people in fun, engaging spaces. We help kids tell the stories they want to tell, in their own way -- thought the arts, writing and play!
What may start as a craft project, may lead to a discussion on design thinking and prototype making, which may lead to making something for your very own Etsy store, or researching an invention. What starts as an illustrated booklet ("zine") may lead to a short stop-motion film based on the characters you’ve just drawn...
Sessions can take us to unexpected places, and we are just as excited to be there as our students!
Most of our classes are geared toward young learners: K to 5th grade and are designed and taught by Sarah-Jane (SJ): artist, published writer, instructor with special education experience, and current after-school creative enrichment specialist.
PLAY IS SERIOUS BUSINESS! ART & STORY-TELLING IS PLAY...
Science tells us that play is essential for healthy development. There are plenty of opportunities to add play to our academic, work, and daily lives.
Play is for everyone. Just add time, space & engaging materials!
Play is imagination, problem-solving, critical and design-thinking, collaboration, invention, risk, failure, success, self-discovery, reflection, pushing through challenges, broadening interests, finding talents and passions, building empathy...
Play can help students manage impulses and develop stronger executive functioning skills -- essential for academic and personal success.
Play is learning, even when it doesn't feel like it.
Most of all, play is fun, and we as educators at The Story Ladder love finding ways to include play in our work and daily lives.
